Twin babies. Nothing conjures up adorable imagery quite like the novelty of these two words. Is there anything cuter? Unlikely. Is there anything more exhausting? Nope. From the moment you’re home with your tiny new bundles (Wait, you’re sending us home, just like that, with 2 infants?!), a few things are certain: the learning curve is steep, the exhaustion is real, the joy is unimaginable, the what-ifs are endless, and the world will never look the same. Things get real, real quick. Tips for Twins was designed to be an inclusive community of twin parents and experts to help with everything you need in your first year of twin parenthood. We want to be part of your “coming home from the hospital with two babies” game plan. No game plan? No problem! Because the reality is that no matter what planning and preparation you embarked on during your twin pregnancy (while useful!), or the amounts of boxes unwrapped, unpacked and checked off, things take an entirely different turn with two infants at home. While twin pregnancy and twin babies are just two words apart, they are two entirely different worlds apart. And Tips for Twins is here to help you adapt to this new world in the best, easiest, most fun, and honest way possible.
So what’s the plan? There is no plan. What’s the only constant with twin babies? Change. The learning curve of twin infants is one for the books. Not unlike singleton infants, welcome to the world of breastfeeding, breast milk storage, pumping, sleep deprivation, formula, bottles, bottle cleaning, diapers, infant car seats, baby carriers, sleep safety, swaddling, bouncy seats, humidifiers, sound machines, pacifiers (or not), loveys (or not) and the list goes on. But unique to twin infants, things come in doubles, and here’s the kicker – sometimes but often not equally (different baby, different preferences), well-timed, or predictable. This reality can leave new twin mamas (who are already healing from hard pregnancies and deliveries) feeling defeated, overwhelmed and mentally and physically drained.
While Tips for Twins can’t pat one baby and bounce the other simultaneously, we do get it. We’ve been there. And we’re here to offer encouragement, real-world insight and proven methods with some version of predictability to equip you with knowledge of what’s to come and ideas of what can help!
Tips for Twins has a downloadable infant tracker so that you can record sleeping, feeding, diapering and miscellaneous notes for each twin – this is something we didn’t even know we needed at first! But trust us, you (and anybody helping) will value this tool! When it comes to twin babies, scheduling is a significant, worthwhile investment of your time and energy. Refer to our articles on how to get your twins on the same feeding and sleep schedules (the holy grail of twin parenthood). We also have compiled lists of twin baby supplies and gear that make life with twin babies a little easier, more practical, less stressful or allow for (gasp) a free hand! Tips for Twins also addresses the timing of certain milestones or changes to be aware of and the coinciding safety measures with each, like when to introduce solid foods, how to spot food allergies, when the babies will get mobile and baby-proofing. And, refer to our Helper Checklist so that if you’re receiving help (which we highly recommend if you’re able), you’re able to set healthy boundaries while also letting helpers know where they can best lend a hand!
Equally as important as all things babies, Tips for Twins cares about nurturing twin moms and dads! Read articles on addressing and minimizing mom guilt (which, quick caveat, will be there forever), supporting your partner, setting proper expectations, and being an awesome team. Like any team, it might not click at first, but you’ll get there! Twin babies. You can do it. You are doing it. You’ll be amazed at what you endure and how strong you really are. You’ll also be amazed at how much you love them and how fun twins are. And when that first year is up, we’ll be happy to help plan a ONEderful world of twins celebration. Cheers!
